There is an ongoing discussion about whether organisations should go for best-of-breed software solutions for their IT infrastructure or whether they should rather pick a holistic solution that combines the enterprise's core areas into one single platform. There are many strong arguments on both sides and we definitely see a constant movement in the software market towards consolidation, at least in some areas of the Information Supply Chain. With a best-of-breed strategy, enterprises make sure to choose the most suitable technology for their specific requirements in that specific area. However, a best-of-breed approach naturally favours overall complexity, thereby potentially increasing costs and the risk of data integrity issues. A holistic approach, on the other hand, can significantly improve processes within an IT infrastructure, thereby enhancing business processes, too.
